The Science of Dog Grooming: How We Match Professional Shampoos to Your Dog’s Coat

Determining the right grooming approach for your dog is based on their unique coat structure and skin behavior. Professional grooming is a primary pillar of your dog’s health, ensuring the coat and skin receive exactly what they need at the time of each appointment.

At Green Dog Mobile Grooming, we have spent over 15 years refining a grooming process that prioritizes skin health and coat function. Our services are structured around the specific requirements of each coat type, utilizing professional-grade products from iGroom to achieve a healthy, professional finish.

Professional grooming shampoos fall into specific categories based on what the coat needs:

  • Clarifying → removes oil and buildup
  • Deshedding → supports undercoat removal
  • Moisturizing → protects coat integrity
  • Hypoallergenic → reduces irritation
  • Texturizing / volumizing → improves structure
  • Whitening → enhances coat color (cosmetic)

Clarifying Shampoos

Purpose: Remove oil, buildup, and environmental debris

Clarifying shampoos are designed to clean at the skin level, removing oil, dirt, and fine desert dust without leaving residue behind.

Common use:
French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Pit Bulls, Beagles, Cane Corsos, German Shorthaired Pointers, Bluetick Coonhounds

Product used:
• iGroom Squeaky Clean Shampoo

Why it matters:
In a dry climate, oil and dust combine quickly, creating buildup that sits directly on the skin. A proper clarifying shampoo removes that completely and prevents the coat from feeling tacky or attracting more debris.

Conditioner:
Not typically used. Adding conditioner can leave a surface film that works against a clean finish.

Deshedding Shampoos

Purpose: Support undercoat removal

Deshedding systems are used for dogs with double coats, where loose undercoat becomes trapped beneath the topcoat.

Common use:
Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Siberian Huskies, Rottweilers, Belgian Malinois

Product used:
• iGroom Deshedding + Detangling Shampoo
• iGroom Deshedding + Detangling Conditioner

Why it matters:
These coats don’t just need cleaning—they need controlled coat release. The conditioner provides slip, allowing the undercoat to be removed effectively during drying and brushing.

Moisturizing Shampoos

Purpose: Protect coat integrity and prevent breakage

Moisturizing systems are used for coats that require flexibility, softness, and protection to prevent tangling and damage.

Common use:
Shih Tzus, Yorkshire Terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Product used:
• iGroom Squalane Care Shampoo
• iGroom Squalane Care Conditioner

Why it matters:
These coats grow continuously and are prone to breakage and matting. Moisture keeps the hair flexible and easier to maintain between appointments.

Hypoallergenic Shampoos

Purpose: Reduce irritation and protect sensitive skin

Hypoallergenic shampoos are used when skin is reactive, inflamed, or easily irritated.

Common use:
Bulldogs (especially in folds), French Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, and any breed with sensitive skin

Product used:
• iGroom Hypoallergenic Shampoo

Why it matters:
When the skin is compromised, the goal shifts from performance to stability—cleaning gently without introducing additional irritation.

Texturizing / Volumizing Shampoos

Purpose: Improve coat structure for grooming

These shampoos are used for coats that need lift and structure, particularly when shaping or scissoring is involved.

Common use:
Poodles (all sizes)

Product used:
• iGroom Extreme Volume Shampoo

Why it matters:
Curly coats need to stand off the body to allow for a controlled finish. This type of shampoo helps create the structure needed for precise grooming work.

Whitening / Brightening Shampoos

Purpose: Enhance coat color (cosmetic)

Whitening shampoos are used to improve the appearance of light-colored coats, reducing discoloration and enhancing brightness.

Common use:
Poodles (light colors), Shih Tzus (white areas), Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and some Bulldogs and French Bulldogs

Product used:
• iGroom True Color Brightening Shampoo (Violet)

How it’s used:
Applied after the coat has already been cleaned.

Important:
• Cosmetic only
• Not used on irritated skin
• Not part of every grooming appointment

Expert Approach to Coat Care

The most effective grooming approach is not about using more products—it’s about using the right product for the job.

  • Some coats need buildup removed
  • Some need undercoat released
  • Some need protection and moisture
  • Some need structure for grooming
  • Some need gentle handling due to skin sensitivity

When the correct system is used:

  • Skin stays cleaner
  • Shedding is managed properly
  • The coat maintains its natural function

How This Translates to Grooming Services

While shampoos are selected based on function, dogs are scheduled based on coat type and the amount of work required.

Every dog fits into one of three service categories, based on coat density, length, and the level of maintenance needed to properly clean and manage the coat. This ensures each appointment has enough time to be completed correctly.

  • Single-Coated (Smooth) Bath & Brush
  • Short Double-Coated Bath & Brush
  • Full Groom or Long / Heavy Double-Coat

This structure ensures the correct products and processes can be used without rushing.
